Art Therapist Job

Position Overview:

The Art Therapist uses creative process of art to improve the mental and emotional well-being of patients. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness and achieve insight.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Meets with patients and arranges activities and sessions
  • Plans and facilitates activities and maintains the workshop/music room and equipment
  • Organizes and carries out one-on-one or group workshops
  • Assesses a patient’s condition and recommends appropriate artistic/musical activity
  • Liaison with case managers and other health professionals and physicians
  • Designs projects using the patient’s understanding of how art media or and music techniques can influence people. For example, patients may create an image showing parts of their past that they would like to leave behind, or a musical piece that threads through an experience
  • Engages clients in reflection about the art they have created.

 Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Art Therapy or Counseling or a related field with an emphasid in Art Therapy
  • ATR Certification required
  • 2 years’ experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills
  • A strong knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of psychotherapy and the role art /music can play in treatment

 Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
